How Much Does a Business Website Cost? The 8 Things That Change the Price

Two websites can look similar and cost very different amounts. Here's what actually drives the price, what you can skip, and how to get a fair quote.

The problem: quotes that are impossible to compare

Ask five people what a website costs and you'll get five wildly different numbers. One quote is suspiciously cheap, another feels outrageous, and none of them explain what you're actually getting. So business owners either overpay, or buy something cheap that never brings a customer.

The fix is understanding what drives the price. Once you do, quotes become easy to compare.

The 8 things that change the price

1. Number of pages and templates

A one-page site is very different from a 30-page site with service, location and blog pages. What matters is how many unique page designs are needed, not just the page count.

2. Who writes the words

Good copy sells; weak copy wastes a beautiful design. Writing conversion-focused copy for every page is real work, and it should be in the quote.

3. Photos and visuals

Using your own photos, buying stock images, or commissioning a photo shoot all cost different amounts.

4. Features

Booking calendars, payments, online stores, customer accounts, multiple languages and integrations with your CRM or WhatsApp each add build and testing time.

5. Online store size

An ecommerce site with 10 products and one with 1,000 products, variants and shipping rules are completely different projects.

6. Custom design versus template

A tailored design built around your brand and customers takes longer than adapting a theme. Both can be right; it depends on how much your website needs to stand out.

7. Search engine optimisation

Basic technical SEO (titles, speed, structured data, a sitemap) should be standard. Ongoing SEO, such as content and local search work, is usually separate.

8. What happens after launch

Hosting, security updates, backups, small edits and improvements cost something every month. Ask who handles them and what's included.

What you can safely skip at the start

  • Fancy animations nobody asked for
  • Pages you don't have content for yet
  • Features your customers won't use in the first six months

Launch with what sells, then add.

Red flags in a quote

  • No written list of pages and features
  • No mention of who owns the domain and the site
  • No timeline or milestones
  • "Unlimited revisions" with no defined scope (it usually means unclear scope)

How EmmaForYou prices websites

Our monthly plans start at $99 a month, and website builds are included or quoted depending on the plan. One-off builds get a fixed quote after a free call, so you know the total before work starts. Standard websites typically take two to three weeks; complex stores or custom builds four to eight.

What you should expect to get for your money

A website that loads fast on a phone, tells visitors exactly what you do and for whom, makes it easy to call, message or book, shows proof, and can be measured. If a quote can't explain how it delivers those five things, keep looking.
