11 Website Mistakes That Quietly Cost Small Businesses Customers (and How to Fix Each)

Your website can look fine and still lose customers every day. These are the eleven problems we find most often in audits, with a fix for each.

The problem: "nice-looking" isn't the same as "working"

Most business owners judge their website by how it looks on their own laptop. Customers judge it in a few seconds on a phone, often on mobile data, while comparing you with two competitors. Search engines and AI assistants judge it by its code.

When we audit small-business websites, the same problems come up again and again. None of them are expensive to fix. All of them cost customers.

1. It's slow on a phone

If your homepage takes several seconds to show anything useful on mobile data, many visitors leave before they see your offer. The usual culprits are huge photos, too many plugins and heavy fonts.

Fix: compress and resize images, serve modern formats such as WebP, and remove scripts you don't use.

2. There's no obvious next step

Visitors shouldn't have to think about what to do. If your "Book now", "Get a quote" or WhatsApp button is hidden at the bottom, you're relying on patience nobody has.

Fix: one clear primary action above the fold, repeated after every major section.

3. Contacting you takes effort

A contact form buried on a separate page, or a phone number shown as an image, adds friction.

Fix: a one-tap WhatsApp button and a click-to-call link, visible on every page.

4. The headline says what you are, not what you do for them

"Welcome to ABC Ventures" tells a visitor nothing. "Same-day laptop repairs in Ikeja, with a 90-day warranty" tells them everything.

Fix: write the headline around the customer's problem and the outcome you deliver.

5. No proof

People trust other customers more than they trust you. A page with no reviews, client logos, photos of real work or results asks for blind faith.

Fix: put reviews and real project photos next to your call to action, not on a separate page.

6. Missing titles and descriptions

Search engines show your page title and description in results. When they're missing, Google picks random text, and fewer people click.

Fix: a unique 50 to 60 character title and a 120 to 155 character description on every important page.

7. No Google Business Profile, or an incomplete one

For local businesses, the map listing often matters more than the website itself.

Fix: a complete profile with hours, photos, services and a steady flow of reviews. See our Google Business Profile guide.

8. It doesn't work well on mobile

Tiny text, buttons too close together and pop-ups that cover the screen all push mobile visitors away.

Fix: design for a phone first, then scale up to desktop.

9. Links shared on WhatsApp look broken

When someone shares your link and it shows no image or title, it looks untrustworthy.

Fix: add Open Graph tags with a branded share image.

10. No way to measure anything

Without analytics you can't tell which pages bring enquiries, so every change is a guess.

Fix: install analytics and track the actions that matter: calls, WhatsApp clicks, form submissions and bookings.

11. Not secure

A site without HTTPS shows a warning in the browser before anyone sees your content.

Fix: an SSL certificate (often free) and a redirect from http to https.

What results to expect from fixing them

You won't fix all eleven in a day, and you don't need to. Fixing the top three or four usually brings the biggest change: more of the visitors you already have will call, message or book. That's why we always start with an audit instead of a redesign.
