The problem: plans don't fail on day one
Most plans start well. Week one is exciting. Week two still has momentum. Then week three arrives: a client emergency, a family event, a bad few days. The plan slips once, then twice, and by week five it's quietly abandoned.
It's rarely a knowledge problem. Most founders and freelancers know what they should do. It's a follow-through problem.
Why it happens
- Goals that are too big or vague. "Grow the business" can't be done on a Tuesday.
- No weekly commitments. Without a specific list for this week, urgent work always wins.
- Nobody notices when you stop. When you're the boss, nobody asks whether you did what you said.
- No plan for the obstacle. You know what usually stops you, but there's no rule for what to do when it shows up.
The structure that works
1. One measurable 90-day goal
"Sign 8 new bookkeeping clients by December 31" beats "get more clients". You know if you've done it.
2. Monthly milestones
Break the goal into three outcomes, one per month, so progress is visible.
3. Three to five weekly actions
Small enough to finish this week, specific enough to tick off: "send 10 personalised messages to past clients", not "do outreach".
4. If-then plans for your usual obstacle
"If I miss two outreach days, then on Saturday morning I'll do a one-hour catch-up before anything else."
5. A weekly check-in with someone else
This is the part most people skip, and the part that matters most. Telling another person what you committed to, and reporting back a week later, changes behaviour.
What results to expect
Accountability doesn't make work easier, but it makes it consistent. Consistent effort over 12 weeks usually beats intense effort for three. Expect clearer priorities, fewer abandoned projects and honest data about what's working.
